American Airlines Bats Down Bankruptcy Rumors, Recession Fears Ground Airlines

American Airlines parent AMR found itself the subject of bankruptcy speculation Monday, with some suggesting a prepackaged trip through Chapter 11 could make the carrier more competitive, as airline stocks cratered in the wake of a dismal forecast from an industry report.

You can almost set your watch to it: recession fears rise and everyone starts worrying about airlines. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) reported that passenger demand was up 4.5% in August from a year ago, but growth slowed from July’s 6% increase and the decline of freight demand accelerated with a 3.8% contraction, compared to 1.8% in July.

IATA Director General Tony Tyler said the airline industry “has shifted gears downward” and had a somber near-term forecast. “With business and consumer confidence continuing to slump globally, there is not a lot of optimism for improved conditions any time soon.
