Brazilian Justice Minister Sees Difference Between Spying Performed by Brazil and the United States

The Brazilian Justice Minister José Eduardo Cardozo denied on Tuesday (5) that Brazil adopted the same espionage practices from which it was a victim from the United States.

Commenting on Folha’s findings that the Brazilian government spied diplomats from countries such as Russia, Iran and USA, Cardozo said these were counterespionage actions and did not violate the rights of people. He evaluates the episode does not affect Brazil’s image.

“I see this as a completely different situation. What happened in relation to Brazil and other countries was a violation of secrecy rules, from the Brazilian Constitution. In other words, we had telematic messages and phone calls violated . Violations that confront the Brazilian sovereignty”, he said.

The Justice Minister pointed out that the counterespionage actions performed by Brazil, as informed by Folha, happened in national territory.

“This is completely legal within set rules. When you think there are spies from foreign powers operating in Brazil, what do you do? Let them spying on you? I do not think so. That is when you perform counterespionage”, he said.

Cardozo also stressed that all countries act this way. “What I can’t do is violate the rights of the people, the sovereignty of people. This seems to be a crucial difference. If we do not make this distinction, you risk giving the impression we are using the same method we are recriminating. This is not the truth”, he insisted.

Comentando sobre os achados da Folha que o governo brasileiro espionou diplomatas de países tais como Rússia, Irã e Estados Unidos, Cardozo disse que esses (achados) foram ações de contraespionagem e que não violaram direitos de pessoas. Ele avalia que o episódio não afeta a imagem do Brasil.
