TEXTO
Brazilian Vaccine Against AIDS to be Tested on Monkeys
Next month, scientists from University of São Paulo (USP) will begin testing on monkeys a DNA vaccine against HIV. The monkeys are not able to contract the virus and will be used to assess the safety of the product and its ability to activate the immune system.
The vaccine, under development since 2001, was inspired by the biochemistry of patients with organisms more resistant to the virus. If the experiment is successful in monkeys, the idea is to test its safety in humans, says Edecio Cunha Neto, leader of the research team responsible for creating the vaccine.
The idea, according to him, is to apply the vaccine in people who does not have the virus in combination with other immunization still to be developed, because the vaccine alone should not be able to offer full protection.
“The vaccine in itself would not offer a cure, but it would be a way to mitigate the disease. Combined with another vaccine, it might contribute to full protection against the HIV virus.”

The vaccine, under development since 2001, was inspired by the biochemistry of patients with organisms more resistant to the virus.
“The vaccine in itself would not offer a cure, but it would be a way to mitigate the disease. Combined with another vaccine, it might contribute to full protection against the HIV virus.”
