In Hollywood, a typical medium-sized town in the American state of Florida, the Police Department (PD) values the development of its community’s youth. The agency recognizes the importance of raising young people to become upstanding, law-abiding citizens. The town serves as home to over 20,000 youth, some of whom live in underprivileged areas and need positive role models.

Officers identified this hardship and began making a difference in many kids’ lives when the department established its Cops Mentoring Kids program during the 2015-2016 academic year. This initiative connects police officers who serve as mentors with at-risk students in local schools.

Mentoring provides an avenue to change future generations’ mind-sets. Countering and preventing recruitment efforts by criminal organizations should concern everyone. Adolescents trying to find their place in the world become most vulnerable to enticement by these groups. Building young people’s self-esteem and values provides resilience against criminal predators’ misguidance.

Based on the text presented above, judge the following items.

Questão 23 – In the first paragraph, “values” (l.3), “recognizes” (l.4) and “serves” (l.6) refer to things done by the Police Department of Hollywood.

Comentários: No enunciado, há três palavras: values, recognized e serves e pergunta-se se elas referem-se a coisas feitas pelo departamento de polícia.  Podemos comprovar que as duas primeiras se referem ao departamento nos seguintes trechos: “… the Police Department (PD) values the development …”, “The agency recognizes the importance of raising young people …” mas no último trecho: “The town serves as home to over 20,000 youth …”percebe-se que o verbo “serves” se refere à cidade e não ao departamento.

Questão 24 – The expression “this hardship” (l.8) refers to information presented in the end of the first paragraph: the fact that many young people live in the town’s urban area.

Comentários: Além de ter a referência de onde você procuraria essa resposta (no fim do primeiro parágrafo), eles também colocaram a seguinte frase: “the fact that many young people live in the town’s urban area.”, que significa: “o fato é que muitas pessoas vivem na área urbana.”

“Hardship” é um sofrimento” e se refere à informação de que os jovens vivem na área urbana, pois é isso que temos no fim do primeiro parágrafo, de que o policiais identificaram esse “peso” (que 20 mil jovens vivem em áreas desprivilegiadas). Portanto, questão correta.

Questão 25 – The expression “Cops Mentoring Kids” (l.10) is the name of the program created by the students of local schools and the Police Department.

Comentários: Essa é uma questão apenas de atenção. Durante o Scanning, percebe-se que o programa foi criado e que se chama Cops Mentoring Kids, mas não foi criado pelos estudantes e sim pelos oficiais de polícia e podemos comprovar isso através do trecho: “Officers identified this hardship and began making a difference in many kids’ lives when the department established its Cops Mentoring Kids program …. This initiative connects police officers who serve as mentors with at-risk students in local schools.”, ou seja, os oficiais de polícia perceberam o quanto os jovens estavam desprivilegiados e sujeitos a criminalidade e criaram o programa.

Comentários: O enunciado afirma que as expressões upstanding e law-abiding são usadas para descrever os tipos de cidadãos que eles querem se tornar e está correto. Podemos comprovar através do seguinte trecho: “… young people to become upstanding, law-abiding citizens.”, ou seja, que respeitem a lei e que também sejam pessoas direitas.

Questão 27 – It can be concluded from the text that working to raise Young people’s self-esteem and values is a way to stop these people from becoming criminals.

Comentários: Pode-se concluir do texto que trabalhar para ajudar essas crianças com autoestima e valores é uma maneira de parar com que eles se tornem criminosos, ou seja, trabalhar a autoestima faz com que esses jovens se sintam melhores e não se tornem criminosos. Mas, essa questão está um pouco vaga. Acredita-se que a banca a julgará como correta.

The same nerves involved in the fight-or-flight response can cause permanent damage to the cells responsible for producing hair color in mice, scientists have found. There is some truth to the longstanding anecdote that your locks can lose color when you’re stressed.

A team of researchers has found that in mice, stressful events damage the stem cells that are responsible for producing pigment in hair. These stem cells, found near the base of each hair follicle, differentiate to form more specialized cells called melanocytes, which generate the brown, black, red and yellow hues in hair and skin. Stress makes the stem cells differentiate faster, exhausting their number and resulting in strands that are more likely to be transparent — gray.

The study, also found that the sympathetic nervous system, which prepares the body to respond to threats, plays an important role in the graying process. “Normally, the sympathetic nervous system is an emergency system for fight or flight, and it is supposed to be very beneficial or, at the very least, its effects are supposed to be transient and reversible,” said Ya-Chieh Hsu.

Stress affects the whole body, so the researchers had to do some investigation to figure out which physiological system was conveying its effects to hair follicles. The findings provide the first scientific link between stress and hair graying. The new study is an important step toward understanding the role of stress on various tissues.

Comentários: O enunciado afirma que os efeitos estão vinculados à resposta de luta a luta, mas não no processo de envelhecimento/coloração cinza (graying). De acordo com o texto, essa questão está errada pois, no trecho: “The same nerves involved in the fight-or-flight response can cause permanent damage to the cells responsible for producing hair color in mice …”, ou seja, os mesmos nervos que envolvem a questão da luta a luta também são responsáveis por produzir a cor, o envelhecimento.

Comentários: O enunciado afirma que o senso comum, de acordo com uma pessoa, o cabelo se tornar grisalho quando ela está estressada, é algo novo mas, de acordo com o texto, “There is some truth to the longstanding anecdote that your locks can lose color when you’re stressed.”, ou seja, tem alguma verdade em uma anedota (algo que já foi dito antigamente), que quando você está estressado, você começa a ficar com o cabelo branco. Se já tem uma crença antiga de que você fica com o cabelo diferente quando se estressa, então não pode ser algo novo.

Questão 30 – Before the study mentioned in the text, a connection between stress and hair graying had never been found in science.

Comentários: De acordo com o enunciado, antes do estudo mencionado no texto, um conexão entre estresse e cabelo cinza nunca tinha sido encontrada pela ciência. Já existia uma anedota antiga que afirmava que quando a pessoa se estressava, ficava com o cabelo branco, mas nunca tinha sido comprovada pela ciência (never been found in science). Item correto.

Questão 31 – Melanocytes are hair follicles which create different color shades in hair and skin.

Comentários: No enunciado, os melanócitos são folículos que criam cores diferentes no cabelo e na pele e de acordo com o texto: “… melanocytes, which generate the brown, black, red and yellow hues in hair and skin.”, sendo que não são folículos e comprovamos o item como incorreto.

Questão 32 – The word “likely” (l.14) conveys the idea of probability.

Comentários: A palavra likely tem -ly e logo você pensa em advérbio, mas significa que algo é “provável”. Então o item está correto, pois a palavra likely passa a ideia de probabilidade sim.
